Therapy for men

Historically, men have encountered distinct obstacles when expressing emotions and seeking psychological support, often constrained by cultural stigmas and ideals of “strength.” Nevertheless, in therapy for men, the objective is to question these preconceptions and establish a secure and inviting environment where men can openly and genuinely explore and tackle their mental health concerns. This approach extends beyond merely being a therapy for men; it is a framework acknowledging and confronting the specific needs and problems that men may confront in their mental well-being journey. Whether addressing the weight of masculine expectations or constructively managing stress and emotions, male therapy offers tools and strategies for these unique experiences.

Most common men's mental health issues

Men, like anyone else, can experience a range of mental health issues. Some of the most common mental health concerns that affect men include:

Depression: Men may experience depression, characterised by persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest, and changes in sleep and appetite.

Anxiety disorders: Conditions such as generalised anxiety disorder, social anxiety, or panic disorder can impact men’s mental well-being, leading to excessive worry or fear.

Substance abuse: Men may be susceptible to issues related to alcohol or substance abuse as a way to cope with stress, emotions, or mental health challenges.

Sexual issues: These issues may include difficulties with erectile function, delayed ejaculation, performance anxiety, or body image concerns.

Pornography addiction: Men may develop a pornography addiction as a response to underlying issues, including but not limited to anxiety, depression, isolation, low self-esteem, and trauma.

Burnout: Pressures at work, job insecurity, or high expectations can lead to stress and negatively impact mental well-being.

Self-esteem: Stemming from a negative self-perception of not being able to meet expectations, fueled by excessive self-demands.

Anger management issues: Difficulties in managing and expressing anger healthily can be a significant concern for some men.

Relationship issues: Challenges in initiating or maintaining romantic relationships: rejections, doubts, conflicts, etc.

Life transition: Existential crises during life changes.

Isolation and loneliness: Men may face challenges in seeking social support, leading to feelings of isolation and loneliness, which can impact mental health.

Symptoms of mental illness in men

Men are not different from anyone else when it comes to experiencing mental health issues. Similar to others, they can encounter a variety of symptoms associated with mental illness. Some common indicators that may suggest mental health challenges in men include:

➤   Changes in sleep patterns

➤   Loss of interest or pleasure

➤   Fatigue or low-energy

➤   Difficulty concentrating

➤   Appetite changes

➤   Physical symptoms, such as headaches, stomachaches, or other bodily discomfort without clear medical causes

➤   Social withdrawal

➤   Anger or irritability

➤   Thoughts of self-harm or death

Our services

While there isn’t a therapy exclusively tailored for men, we advocate for widely researched and proven therapeutic approaches. Our commitment lies in delivering high-quality treatments, with a focus on established therapies that have demonstrated substantial success, notably cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). Furthermore, we embrace cutting-edge third-wave therapies like acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), compassion-focused therapy (CFT), and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT).

CBT for men

CBT for men is a goal-oriented approach that focuses on making sense of the interplay between thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. The process commences with an assessment, during which specific goals for improvement are identified through active participation from the person.

Thought awareness and restructuring become central, with clients working alongside the therapist to challenge and transform negative thought patterns into more balanced and constructive ones. Behavioural strategies are then introduced to modify actions contributing to distress, teaching coping skills and stress management techniques.

Skill-building focuses on practical tools for effective problem-solving and decision-making. In cases of anxiety or phobias, exposure and desensitisation techniques may be employed to confront and overcome fears. Homework assignments reinforce therapeutic strategies outside of sessions, ensuring continuous learning and skill application.

The termination phase involves preparing the person with relapse prevention strategies and maintaining the gains achieved during therapy. CBT for men is flexible, adapted to particular needs, and proves effective for various mental health concerns.

Our approach to therapy for men

We acknowledge the prevailing stigma surrounding therapy for men and are committed to dismantling it. Just like women, men encounter challenging times in life that can be difficult to navigate alone. It’s crucial to recognize that men and women share the same brain structures, implying that symptoms experienced by women can also be experienced by men.

The stereotype of a man being inherently strong is misguided. True strength, for both men and women, lies in acknowledging challenges and seeking viable solutions, sometimes necessitating assistance from others. Asking for help is a display of resourcefulness and resilience rather than a sign of weakness. The notion that individuals should always solve problems independently is a myth; our brains are wired for social connection, emphasising the importance of mutual support.

Aligned with these principles, we aim to offer men therapy tailored to their needs, employing first-line treatments in a secure and non-judgmental space. We recognize that seeking help is a natural and essential aspect of our human condition, emphasising the interconnectedness that defines our shared experiences.
